SMILES International Workshop 2010
Overview
Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) was designed to be aboard the Japanese
Experiment Module (JEM) on the International Space Station (ISS) as a collaboration project of
the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the National Institute of Information and Communications
Technology (NICT).
SMILES was launched by the H-IIB rocket with the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) on
September 11, 2009, and SMILES was successfully attached to the JEM on September 25. During the checkout SMILES
started almost continuous observations since October 12. It has been performing very well as expected,
and reasonable retrieval results have been coming out so far (
[Press release]).
To introduce the first observation data and the processing status, to present some validation results and
comparisons, and to discuss about scientific themes derived from the SMILES data, we will have an international
workshop during March 1 and 2, 2010 at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) of JAXA,
in Sagamihara, Japan. This meeting is intended to gather researchers who submitted proposals in response
to the Research Announcement, but those who are interested in the SMILES data are also welcome. We hope during
this meeting all attendees get the impression about high potential of the SMILES observations.
